Eid Meelad-un-Nabi is celebrated with great honor in Pakistan. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth of our holy prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Our Prophet (peace be upon him) was born on the twelfth of Rabi-ul-Awwal nearly fourteen hundred years back. This day is celebrated in all the Muslim countries and by all the Muslims of the world but in Pakistan the people celebrate in a particular way.
The Pakistanis have great respect for their Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)-the respect which goes to the extent of extreme love and devotion. Every Muslim takes it as a great honor to follow the footsteps of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), to preserve his memory, to attend to his teachings with utmost care and regard, and ultimately to die for him. It is due to such an esteem of the highest degree that the Eid Meelad-un-Nabi is celebrated every year with increasing sense of devotion.
The preparations begin about a week earlier. All the offices, banks and institutions are closed to enable the people to enjoy the day. All the religious, educational and other organizations begin to make preparations, The streets, the bazaars, the houses and the public buildings are profusely decorated. Thousands of rupees are spent on decorations. At night the cities and the towns are extremely colorful Arches are prepared and the placards bearing certain verses are set up. The bulbs of various sizes and colors and the fluorescent tubes add to the glory and sublimity of the occasion. The houses and especially the mosques and religious schools and 'Jamias' are illuminated.
The rich people in their personal capacity and all other organizations distribute alms to the poor people. In the mohallahs the feasts are held in which all the people of the mohallah are invited without any distinction of their financial or social status. Such feasts preserve the memory of the teachings of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding equality and fraternity of all the people.
Throughout the day, and even till late hours of the evening, the processions are taken in which the people participate with great zeal. It is really very thrilling to see the precisionists moving at snail's pace on motor cars, taxis, jeeps, buses tongas, camels, horses and even bullock carts. They shout slogans and recite 'Naats' and verses from the Holy Quran.
At certain important places, in each town or city, the shamianas are set up where 'Qawalis' are held. These 'Qawalis', purely religious in purpose, are very effective and exhort every-Muslim to-follow the teachings of Islam.
In the religious and educational institutions the meetings are held in which the 'Ulemas' deliver speeches and throw light on the teachings of Islam and various aspects of the life and character of the Holy Prophet,(peace be upon him).
All the stations of radio Pakistan organize special broadcasts on (his day. These features remind the people of their duty to Islam and the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). The magazines and the newspapers publish special editions on the life, character and achievement of our Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
